The quality and comprehensiveness of that work, which informed a recent update to <a href=\"https:\/\/coachfederation.org\/app\/uploads\/2019\/11\/ICFCompetencyModel_Oct2019.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">ICF\u2019s Core Competency Model<\/a>, was recognized nationally when the American Society of Association Executives (ASAE) recently awarded ICF a <a href=\"https:\/\/coachfederation.org\/blog\/international-coaching-federation-job-analysis-process-recognized-by-asae\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Silver Award<\/a> through its 2020 Power of A Awards program.<\/p>\n<p>The HumRRO team involved in the practice analysis included <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humrro.org\/corpsite\/profile\/andrea-sinclair\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Andrea Sinclair<\/a>, Ph.D., as project director and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humrro.org\/corpsite\/profile\/gavan-oshea\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Gavan O\u2019Shea<\/a>, Ph.D., as technical lead. \u201cI was impressed by ICF\u2019s consistent commitment to conducting a truly rigorous practice analysis,\u201d O\u2019Shea shared. The technical approach included:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>An extensive literature review<\/li>\n<li>Semi-structured interviews with coaching thought leaders<\/li>\n<li>Generation and analysis of over 250 critical incidents written by 16 coaches from 10 different countries<\/li>\n<li>A global task and knowledge, skill, ability, and other characteristic (KSAO) survey completed by more than 1,200 coaches<\/li>\n<li>A task-KSAO linkage exercise<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>One of the unique aspects of ICF\u2019s analysis of coaching practice was its careful attempt to illuminate mental and emotional processes as well as observable behavior\u2014in short, the \u201cbeing\u201d side of coaching as well as the \u201cdoing\u201d side.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThrough consultation with ICF, we decided to expand the traditional critical incident methodology\u2014along with asking coaches to record the behavior they had engaged in and its associated outcomes, we also asked them to write about the emotional, cognitive, and self-regulatory processes they were experiencing,\u201d O\u2019Shea noted. \u201cHad we not done this, we certainly would have missed identifying capabilities that are vital to coaching.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This example highlights how critical it is to think though whether traditional practice analysis methods can be modified or enhanced to conduct the most informative study possible, and why collaborating with a client can yield an approach that is tailored to their unique needs and context.<\/p>\n<\/div><div class=\"fusion-clearfix\"><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><div class=\"fusion-fullwidth fullwidth-box fusion-builder-row-2 nonhundred-percent-fullwidth non-hundred-percent-height-scrolling\" style=\"background-color: rgba(255,255,255,0);background-position: center center;background-repeat: no-repeat;padding-top:0px;padding-right:0px;padding-bottom:0px;padding-left:0px;margin-bottom: 0px;margin-top: 0px;border-width: 0px 0px 0px 0px;border-color:#eae9e9;border-style:solid;\" ><div class=\"fusion-builder-row fusion-row\"><div class=\"fusion-layout-column fusion_builder_column fusion-builder-column-1 fusion_builder_column_1_1 1_1 fusion-one-full fusion-column-first fusion-column-last\" style=\"margin-top:0px;margin-bottom:20px;\"><div class=\"fusion-column-wrapper fusion-flex-column-wrapper-legacy\" style=\"background-position:left top;background-repeat:no-repeat;-webkit-background-size:cover;-moz-background-size:cover;-o-background-size:cover;background-size:cover;padding: 0px 0px 0px 0px;\"><div class=\"fusion-sep-clear\"><\/div><div class=\"fusion-separator fusion-full-width-sep\" style=\"margin-left: auto;margin-right: auto;margin-bottom:45px;width:100%;\"><div class=\"fusion-separator-border sep-shadow\" style=\"background:radial-gradient(ellipse at 50% -50% , #e0dede 0px, rgba(255, 255, 255, 0) 80%) repeat scroll 0 0 rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);background:-webkit-radial-gradient(ellipse at 50% -50% , #e0dede 0px, rgba(255, 255, 255, 0) 80%) repeat scroll 0 0 rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);background:-moz-radial-gradient(ellipse at 50% -50% , #e0dede 0px, rgba(255, 255, 255, 0) 80%) repeat scroll 0 0 rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);background:-o-radial-gradient(ellipse at 50% -50% , #e0dede 0px, rgba(255, 255, 255, 0) 80%) repeat scroll 0 0 rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);\"><\/div><\/div><div class=\"fusion-sep-clear\"><\/div><style type=\"text\/css\"><\/style><div class=\"fusion-title title fusion-title-1 fusion-sep-none fusion-title-center fusion-title-text fusion-title-size-two\" style=\"margin-top:0px;margin-right:0px;margin-bottom:31px;margin-left:0px;\"><h2 class=\"title-heading-center fusion-responsive-typography-calculated\" style=\"margin:0;color:#009cd7;--fontSize:24;line-height:1.5;\">What Makes a Good Partnership?<\/h2><\/div><div class=\"fusion-clearfix\"><\/div><\/div><\/div><div class=\"fusion-layout-column fusion_builder_column fusion-builder-column-2 fusion_builder_column_1_1 1_1 fusion-one-full fusion-column-first fusion-column-last\" style=\"margin-top:0px;margin-bottom:20px;\"><div class=\"fusion-column-wrapper fusion-flex-column-wrapper-legacy\" style=\"background-position:left top;background-repeat:no-repeat;-webkit-background-size:cover;-moz-background-size:cover;-o-background-size:cover;background-size:cover;padding: 0px 0px 0px 0px;\"><div class=\"fusion-text fusion-text-2\"><h3>One of the many reasons why the HumRRO-ICF partnership has been so productive is because each organization brings knowledge and skill around both industrial-organizational (I-O) psychology and coaching. For example, O\u2019Shea is an ICF-certified coach, and Joel DiGirolamo, ICF\u2019s director of coaching science, has a background in I-O psychology.<\/h3>\n<p>\u201cFrom the get-go, ICF made it clear that they wanted a true partnership with HumRRO\u2014much like the kind of partnership that happens in good coaching relationships, actually,\u201d said O\u2019Shea. \u201cThey always come to the table with a clear goal in mind for a project, and then, together, we discuss the different paths available and the pros and cons of each before they make a decision about how to move forward.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn my nearly 20-year career, it is probably the most collaborative partnership I\u2019ve ever experienced with a client,\u201d noted O\u2019Shea.<\/p>\n<p>Carrie Abner, vice president of ICF Credentials and Standards, also evoked a coaching metaphor when discussing the ICF-HumRRO partnership: \u201cIn professional coaching, partnership between the coach and client is critical to success. This work rests on a test blueprint that integrates the practice analysis results and extensive subject matter expert (SME) input.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/li><li style=\"background-color:rgba(255,255,255,0);\" class=\"fusion-li-item\"><span style=\"background-color:#007db7;font-size:14.08px;height:27.2px;width:27.2px;margin-right:11.2px;\" class=\"icon-wrapper circle-yes\"><i class=\"fusion-li-icon fa-users fas\" style=\"color:#ffffff;\" aria-hidden=\"true\"><\/i><\/span><div class=\"fusion-li-item-content\" style=\"margin-left:38.4px;color:#585858;\">\n<h3 class=\"fusion-responsive-typography-calculated\" style=\"margin-top: 0px; --fontsize: 18; line-height: 1.5;\" data-fontsize=\"18\" data-lineheight=\"27px\"><strong>Team Coaching<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>HumRRO just completed a study of team coaching, which identified how it is different from one-to-one coaching as well as other team-focused interventions, such as team building, team training, and team consultation. The results of this work are currently informing the development of an ICF Team Coaching Competency Model, which both complements and builds on the Core Competency Model. The study revealed that:<\/p>\n<ul style=\"padding-top: 15px;\">\n<li style=\"padding-bottom: 10px;\">A key goal of team coaching\u2014perhaps <i>the<\/i> key goal\u2014is team ownership. In this case, ownership refers not only to the dialogue and processes that occur during the coaching engagement, but also to their collective growth and development, their goals and accountability mechanisms, their regulatory and feedback processes, and their successes and failures.<\/li>\n<li style=\"padding-bottom: 10px;\">Across an engagement, team coaches often flexibly and adaptively deploy a variety of modalities beyond coaching, including more directive approaches, in the service of team learning and growth.<\/li>\n<li>The range of intervention modalities typically offered by team coaches demands considerable expertise beyond \u201cpure\u201d coaching skills, including knowledge of team dynamics, feedback provision, conflict management, systems theory, leadership styles, and team development stages.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div><\/li><li style=\"background-color:rgba(255,255,255,0);\" class=\"fusion-li-item\"><span style=\"background-color:#007db7;font-size:14.08px;height:27.2px;width:27.2px;margin-right:11.2px;\" class=\"icon-wrapper circle-yes\"><i class=\"fusion-li-icon fa-user-circle fas\" style=\"color:#ffffff;\" aria-hidden=\"true\"><\/i><\/span><div class=\"fusion-li-item-content\" style=\"margin-left:38.4px;color:#585858;\">\n<h3 style=\"margin-top: 0;\"><strong>Psychometric Consultation<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>ICF uses a set of competency-linked behavioral indicators to score the performance assessments that applicants must submit to earn the Professional Certified Coach (PCC) credential. These \u201cPCC markers\u201d were updated to reflect the new Core Competency Model, and HumRRO is working with ICF to design and conduct an equating study that employs item response theory (IRT) based techniques to ensure consistency in passing standards.<\/div><\/li><\/ul><div class=\"fusion-clearfix\"><\/div><\/div><\/div><div class=\"fusion-layout-column fusion_builder_column fusion-builder-column-7 fusion_builder_column_1_1 1_1 fusion-one-full fusion-column-first fusion-column-last\" style=\"margin-top:0px;margin-bottom:20px;\"><div class=\"fusion-column-wrapper fusion-flex-column-wrapper-legacy\" style=\"background-position:left top;background-repeat:no-repeat;-webkit-background-size:cover;-moz-background-size:cover;-o-background-size:cover;background-size:cover;padding: 0px 0px 0px 0px;\"><div class=\"fusion-text fusion-text-5\"><p>An oft-cited quip says that while mentors and teachers have \u201cgreat answers for your questions,\u201d a coach has \u201cgreat questions for your answers.\u201d While an accurate statement, our research collaboration with ICF shows that questions are more powerful and impactful when you work together from the beginning as a true, strategic partner.
